After a brilliant academic
career when he took his M.A. degree in Economics and
Statistics and after a stint as Assistant Professor of
Economics and Statistics in the Madras Christian College, and later in applied
Economic Research in Delhi, Mr.Vaikunth
entered the Indian Police Service as a directly recruited officer in
1961. He was allotted to
Tamil Nadu Cadre by virtue of his high rank in the
All India list and his topping the list in
Tamil Nadu Cadre that year. He has behind him a multi-faceted
and a variety of administrative and managerial experience
spanning over 35 years in District
Police Administration, Madras City Metropolitan
Police Administration, Special wings in
the CID, Prison & Fire Service
Administration, climaxing as the Commissioner of
Police, Chennai City and as the Chief of Police – Tamil Nadu.
He is considered to be an outstanding officer known for his efficiency, integrity and bold decisions. He has to his credit Seven President’s Medals – the only well-decorated officer in the State. Among the seven medals there are two distinguished service medals – one for his outstanding service in the police force and another for his outstanding service in the field of Civil Defence – here again he is the only police officer in the country who has got this medal and the first officer who has got two President’s distinguished service medals. He was thus considered to be a live wire in the police force.
